In 26 weeks, I will be running my very first, full-on marathon. That’s right folks, my short legs will be traveling a whole 26.2 miles up and down the Las Vegas Strip during the Las Vegas Rock n Roll Marathon on November 12th. Good Lord, what have I gotten myself into?
This isn’t exactly my first rodeo – err – race. If you’ve followed me on Insta for a while, you’ll know that I ran the Rock n Roll Half Marathon last year. And the Salt Lake City Half Marathon the two years prior. So I’ve always seen the big dogs running the big race, but I’ve never jumped off the porch and ran it with them.
Ok enough analogies/metaphors, but hey, it is Monday morning…
The full marathon (specifically the Boston Marathon) is something I’ve wanted to do for a while, but it wasn’t until the Boston Marathon Bombing back in 2013 that I really felt the urge to make running a priority. If you know me, you know that I’ve loved the Red Sox for the last 20 years or so and as an extension of that – all Boston sports and the city itself. So when this act of terror took place, it really kicked me into gear. I wanted to run that race and show the world that we all stood in solidarity against fear and terrorists.
[I’ll be discussing my history with running this week on the Pod so be on the lookout for that!!]
This is not an overnight decision or something I can wake up one morning and just do like a Nike ad. The process for this major goal began five years ago and I’m still chipping away at it today. Running a full marathon is the next major milestone on the journey to Boston and later this year, exactly one month before I turn 26, I will complete this challenge.
I’m starting my training 26 weeks out because I know myself and I want to be as prepared as I can possibly be. I’ve seen my best results when I work on things consistently, over time. In the quest for 26.2, I think this is the best strategy.
So stay tuned because I’m giving training updates every Monday (aka #MarathonMonday – I know how clever I am ha ha.)
